NUW Central Branch Leads the Way in Market Research

Tuesday June 11, 2002

The NUW has embarked on an organising campaign in the Market Research industry. While a significant number of workers in the industry are NUW members, there are areas where low union density has left unorganised market researchers without the strong voice needed to represent their interests and resolve workplace issues.

The Central Branch of the NUW has played a key role in the organising campaign. A series of extremely successful meetings with market research industry worker were held in New South Wales in late May. As a result of these meetings, over 150 new members have joined the Central Branch.

In the first 3 days of the meeting programme, NUW officials met with around 200 workers and over 130 of them joined the Union. In addition, over 20 active members have come forward to become more involved in the Union and hold delegates positions.

As a matter of policy, the NUW works hard to ensure members are provided with strong workplace organisation. The Union offers training to equip members with bargaining skills and knowledge. Resources are provided to members to support them at the workplace. Consistent with this objective, since the organising meetings in NSW, Union committees have been established at most sites to provide members with a mechanism to deal with workplace issues. In addition, the first Union delegates’ training for Market Research members in New South Wales has been organised.

Dominique Rowe, a Market Research Interviewer and Union member will be assisting the Central Branch in developing delegates networks across New South Wales and campaigning for a new enterprise agreement in 2003.

The results of the organising campaign in the market research industry in NSW have been great for the workers in New South Wales who, up until now, have had no direct representation at their workplaces or in national negotiations.

Over the last 2 years the low level of organisation in the industry in New South Wales has been a ‘missing link’ in the NUW’s campaign for better wages and conditions in market research. With the new agreement due to expire early next year, NUW members in NSW and throughout the country are in a stronger bargaining position. Market researchers in NSW will have a real voice in the negotiations of their wages and conditions.

The NUW welcomes all the new members and representatives at AC Nielsen, Millward Brown, TNS and Newspoll.
