Speeches
Monday July 11, 2005
Here you will find speeches about the Howard Government's propsed industrial changes.
The first speech is from the ACTU Secretary, Greg Combet. This speech was delivered to the National Press Club in July, shortly after the Howard Government took control of the Senate. It takes a broad look at the Federal Government's plans, and explains why the changes will hurt working Australians and their families.
The second speech comes from Stephen Smith, the Federal Shadow Minister for Industry, Infrastructure and Industrial Relations.
The speech was delivered by Smith to the University of West Australia Labor Club at the end of August. The speech deals with two of the key industrial changes being proposed by the Federal Government - minimum wages and unfair dismissals.
Smith details how minimum wage earners would be $2600 a year worse off had the Howard Government had its way with minimum wages, rather than being ruled on by the AIRC.
Smith also talks about the unfairness in a system that provides protection to some employees from harsh employers, but not others. He also speaks about the lack of evidence that removing unfair dismissal provisions would improve employment rates.
The third speech is again from Stephen Smith. This speech was delivered to the House of Representatives in response the Howard Government's announcement of further industrial changes.
