Federal Opposition leader Kevin Rudd, Federal ALP Candidate for La Trobe Rodney Cocks, and Federal ALP Candidate for Deakin Mike Symon paid a surprise visit to NUW members at Goodyear Belting in Bayswater today (Monday November 19, 2007).

In the final week of his hectic Election Campaign schedule Mr Rudd took an hour out to tour the site and talk to members about their jobs and the upcoming Federal Poll.

While at the Dunlop Court site Mr Rudd also took the chance to comment on the release of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet report into Federal Government spending on advertising.

The report, released today, showed that the Howard Government had spent nearly $285million on advertising in the year to June 30.

Mr Rudd noted that that was before the Howard Government had really ramped up its political advertising campaign from July, in the lead up to the election announcement.

He said it was a disgraceful waste of taxpayers’ money and reiterated that a Rudd Labor Government would put an end to the glut of Government advertising.

Mr Rudd reminded the crowd at Goodyear Belting that that money could have paid for one million dental consultations, 280,000 hospital bed nights or 20,000 hip replacement operations. Money much better spent.

The report also noted that the Ministerial Committee on Government Communications – which makes the key decisions regarding advertising campaigns before advising the Government Communications Unit – met 58 times in the year to June 30, more than Federal Cabinet.
