Arnotts doesn’t give a cracker for Christmas spirit
Friday December 22, 2006
The National Union of Workers (NSW Branch) has condemned the actions of the Arnotts company in sacking a worker three days before Christmas as reprehensible and “Scrooge-like”.
Michael Eid, a storeman for Arnotts Snack Foods at Smithfield, was sacked after 20 years service. Arnotts accused Mr Eid of a “violation of company policy”.
NUW spokesman Mark Ptolemy said that the attitude of the US-owned biscuit and snack food maker was harsh in the extreme considering the circumstances and the time of year.
“Mr Eid simply moved a carton to make room for more products to stack. The company jumped on this as an opportunity to sack a loyal and productive worker with 20 years service.
“This is a case of American workplace culture gone mad,” Ptolemy said.
“Arnotts have implemented Howard’s new Industrial Relations laws to sack a family man three days before Christmas.
“It is a heartless and low act made possible by Howard’s unfair WorkChoices legislation,” Ptolemy said.
The NUW believes that the company should have shown some compassion towards their employee during the festive season.
“When it comes to showing any Christmas spirit towards their workers, Arnotts don’t give a cracker,” Ptolemy said.
