The NUW NSW Branch is calling for immediate Federal Government assistance for 180 Ricegrowers Limited employees who have been made redundant due to the drought.

One hundred and eighty workers from the Ricegrowers Limited Deniliquin, Coleambally, Leeton and Griffith sites will have their jobs cut leading up to Christmas this year. NUW State Secretary Derrick Belan will be asking the Federal Government to commit to providing financial assistance for retraining and redeployment for the affected workers.

“We will be seeking a similar commitment from the Labor Party, should they win Government on November 24.

“Obviously, this is an emergency for these workers, their families and their communities. There must be a strategy for assisting them,” Belan said.

The NUW acknowledges that the redundancies are a direct result of the drought in Southern NSW.

“These lay-offs are due to the ongoing drought being suffered in the rice growing districts of Australia. This is a harsh reminder of the precarious environmental situation we are facing in this country.

“The Ricegrowers Ltd redundancies show us that we are all made vulnerable by environmental factors, industrially, economically and as a society,” he said.
