Paddington Markets in Sydney will play host to an art auction to help raise money for the recovery effort in Indonesia after an earthquake earlier this year.

Presented by Indonesian Solidarity and Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA, ‘ARTQUAKE’ will take place on Saturday, October 7 at the Stone Gallery at Eastside Arts in Sydney.

Viewing for the auction will begin at 10am, with a great selection of art going under the hammer at 3pm.

Money raised by ‘ARTQUAKE’ will assist the relief effort in Indonesia, which is becoming increasingly urgent as Monsoon season draws near.

More than 6,000 Indonesians lost their lives in the earthquake that hit the city of Yogyakarta, Central Java on May 27. The quake also injured 46,000 and left over 600,000 homeless.

Several months on from the quake, many Indonesians are still living in makeshift tents or shelters on the side of the road.

The May quake was compounded by another major earthquake on June 17 which struck the seabed off the coast of West Java. This caused a tsunami that struck the south coast of West Java, killing 660 people and leaving 51,500 homeless.

WALHI – the Indonesian Forum for Environment has been working tirelessly in both areas helping survivors rebuild their lives.

WALHI urgently needs the help of Australians to enable it to continue their much-needed work in each disaster-affected area.

‘ARTQUAKE’ is a great way to support the relief effort, as well as purchase work from some of Australia’s finest artists.

Many of Australia’s top artists have donated work for the auction. For a full list of those donating artists, go to www.apheda.org.au
