NSW State Secretary Derrick Belan has urged voters to support Morris Iemma at this weekend's State Election

NUW New South Wales Branch Secretary Derrick Belan has urged NUW members to support Morris Iemma’s Labor Government at the State Election this Saturday, March 24, 2007.
“In the past 18 months Morris Iemma has worked hard for NSW and has shown his support for working people,” Belan said.
He said that voters needed to contrast Iemma and his Government with his main opponent Peter Debnam.
“Peter Debnam has shown he is not a friend of working people,” Belan said.
“He is closely linked to John Howard. He publicly said that he would hand over the NSW IR system to Canberra. This would mean that the next step for the Liberals would be to assault our workers’ compensation system and Health and Safety standards in our workplaces.”
Belan added that Debnam’s anti-worker philosophy was shown by his pledge to attack NSW public and community sector workers.
“Peter Debnam has promised to sack 20,000 workers. He has campaigned on his crazy pledge to axe 20,000 public & community sector jobs. We cannot support any politician whose platform is sacking workers.
“This would have a drastic effect on vital services that are used by workers and their families. One in seven positions would be hit by this mad promise.”
According to Belan, the Liberal opposition in NSW had offered no viable alternative to the people of NSW.
“The Liberals have offered no adequate policies or properly funded ideas at all. Their vision is to sack more workers, offer fewer services and move us towards a John Howard-controlled society.
“I urge all NUW members to reject the Liberals and give Morris Iemma a chance to continue his good work in NSW,” Belan concluded.
