Press Release

Rock the Vote is coming to Queensland!

Friday September 15, 2006

If you want to rock, and find out about Your Rights at Work, then you need to be in Brisbane on Saturday, November 18 for 'Rock the Vote'.

Presented by the Queensland Council of Unions, Brisbane will host 'Rock the Vote' as part of the union movement's Your Rights at Work Campaign, and is sure to be one of the biggest concerts of the year.

'Rock the Vote' will take over Brisbane’s RNA Showgrounds in an 11 hour marathon featuring a host of Australia’s best bands and comedians, as well as essential information about a raft of new laws introduced by the Howard Government that affect the lives of every Australian, particularly young Australians.

John Howard's IR laws affect Australia’s youngest workers more than any other group. With less experience in the workforce and therefore less bargaining power, young workers need to know their rights. 'Rock the Vote' will make sure they do.

Meanwhile, the Howard Government passed the Electoral and Referendum Amendment (Electoral Integrity and Other Measures) Act earlier this year. Under these changes citizens no longer have seven days to enrol to vote or change their address details after the announcement of an election. Now the elctoral roll will close the same day writs for an election are issued, which for the last two elections has been the day following the election announcement.

Young people aged 18–24 have the lowest enrolment figure of any eligible age group. Because they may not have been eligible to vote in a previous election, they often leave their enrolment to after an election is called. Now under the Howard Government's new laws, it may be too late for many young Australians to have their say about who runs their country; too late to have their say about decisions that will affect their futures.

'Rock the Vote' will encourage those attending to add their name to the electoral role. Activists from the Your Rights At Work Campaign will also be on-site to give a full run down on how the Howard Government's IR will affect workers.

But on top of some helpful information about the Howard Government's recent changes to the law, there will also be plenty of music to keep you rocking out all day:

  • Bonafide legends of Australian rock’n’roll YOU AM I will go hell for leather on the 'Rock The Vote' stage with tracks from their latest release Convicts as well as a few faves from their amazing back catalogue.
  • After fifteen years recording highly memorable tunes, SPIDERBAIT will hit the 'Rock the Vote' stage in the wake of their Greatest Hits album of last year.
  • New Zealand's favourite rockers SHIHAD will light up the stage on the back of last year's highly acclaimed album 'Love is the New Hate'.
  • Brisbane’s very own THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT released their second studio album, Imago, a few months back to rave reviews. Don’t miss their distinctive melodic heavy rock sounds when they stop off at 'Rock The Vote'.
  • Fellow local act SOMA RASA will show the 'Rock the Vote' crowd why they are at the forefront of the Australian electro/breaks scene when they serve up an eclectic and high energy dance set.
  • Brisbane’s own DJ SAMPOLOGY will be on hand to get everyone jumping with his very own mix of hip-hop, funk, breakbeat, disco, quality house, drum and bass and whatever else happens to take his fancy on November 18!
  • And rounding out the Brisbane influence at 'Rock the Vote' will be legends the RESIN DOGS. For the past year they’ve been playing all over the world, but come November they'll be on home soil to turn it on at 'Rock the Vote'.
  • You are advised to wear a pair of solid toe shoes if you venture near Australian act ACE’s performance at 'Rock The Vote'. Their recent release Breakfast Shift is a patchwork of musical nostalgia, spanning the 1950’s to the 1970’s. Make sure you check out their lovely spread of very hummable tunes!
  • After appearances at the Big Day Out, Vibes On A Summers Day and a host of other festivals plus tours with 50 Cent, Missy Elliott, Run DMC, De La Soul, Black Eyed Peas, Jungle Brothers, Grandmaster Flash, and Jurrasic 5, DJ NICK TOTH will turn it on live at 'Rock the Vote'!
  • Meanwhile, 'Rock the Vote' will have an international flavour thanks to two of California's finest. Straight from the Bay Area of California, 'Rock The Vote' will welcome hip-hop legend LYRICS BORN, founder of the seminal hip-hop collective Solesides, as well as PIGEON JOHN, whose quality rhymes will flow from the 'Rock the Vote' stage.

Early bird tickets for this incredible line-up are just $35 dollars, and will be on sale between September 18 and October 9 or until sold out.

To purchase tickets for 'Rock the Vote', go to www.etix.com.au, or call 1300 762 545. If you live in Brisbane, you can purchase tickets from Rockinghorse, Skinnys, and Butterbeats (City and Valley). Tickets are also on sale at Sunflower on the Gold Coast, and Mosh Pit on the Sunshine Coast.

Gates will open at 'Rock the Vote' at 11.00am, and will close at 10.00pm, with the first band hitting the stage at 11.30am.

Meanwhile, stay tuned for www.rockthevote.com.au, which will go live very soon.
