QLD NUW members to pressure MPs on IR

Queensland NUW members meet to oppose the Federal Government's IR proposals

Members at the Australian Pharmaceutical Industries (API) site at Richlands will write letters of protest to their respective local MPs in an effort to maintain public pressure on the Federal Government over the proposed IR reforms.

The decision comes after a meeting between API members and NUW Officials outlining the impact the Howard Government’s reforms could have on them, their families, and their community.

All members at the meeting were opposed to the reforms, which include a severe watering down of the ‘no disadvantage test’ for Enterprise Agreements and individual contracts, as well as the exemption from unfair dismissal laws of businesses with 100 employees or less.

API members also signed petitions against the changes.
The action from members at API comes as the Howard Government continues to refuse to guarantee that no worker will be worse off under the new system.

Since the announcement of the changes in May, the Government has been in disarray over the impact of the legislation, as examples of workers being treated badly on individual contracts continue to surface in the media.
