Member numbers grow in Queensland
Wednesday August 17, 2005
The Queensland Branch of the NUW is on the up and this membership growth looks set to continue after 16 Delegates attended an introductory training session earlier this month.
The Introductory Delegates Course was held on August 3 and 4, and was attended by Delegates from sites including with Ford, Officeworks, Tenix, QANTAS, Chep, and Pacific Brands.
The two-day course was designed to enhance Delegates’ dispute resolution and recruiting stills; both of which are vital to maintain and increase membership density at NUW sites.
The key to union strength at any site is membership support. When workers support each other and fight for their rights together, they have a much greater chance of success, and we all have seen this time and time again in our own workplaces.
This is why it is so important that Delegates are able to run induction sessions for new employees and assist in the membership recruitment process.
The skills that they learn during the introductory course give them the confidence and expertise to run these sessions and ensure the rights of their workmates are protected.
The dispute resolution skills are also invaluable for Delegates when they are approached with issues by fellow members or management.
With the Federal Government’s proposed IR changes designed to limit the effectiveness of unions in the workplace, as well as increase the presence of individual contracts on sites governed by a union agreement, Queensland Delegates are improving their skills at just the right time.
