Labour Day 2006 - A day to remember
Friday May 05, 2006
Attendance for Labour Day 2006 was expected at around 10,000 people in support of the campaign for your rights at work. Instead the RNA showgrounds held over 35,000 supporters in the largest Labour Day in the history of our nation.
The NUW Queensland Branch saw over 300 members attend wearing newly-designed bright red NUW shirts and carrying with pride the NUW flags and posters. Members were thrilled to march in tune with the PA system which played old and new union songs about solidarity and anti-John Howard music.
Branch Secretary Mark Furner said: “the NUW members and their families inspired us in our fight against the Howard Government’s extreme Industrial Relations reforms.
“This is only the start of the campaign to show Howard our members and their families and friends are not prepared to cop his insidious laws”.
After the march kids enjoyed the rides, while parents relaxed in the NUW tent enjoying a delicious BBQ and refreshing drinks.
Special guests included Peter Beattie, Kim Beazley and Sharan Burrow, who were overwhelmed by the number of supporters. Members were later greeted by Opposition Leader the Hon Kim Beazley, which certainly topped off a great day.
Not only was there a huge show of support on Labour Day, in the past year there has been a 4 per cent growth in union membership, evidence that union members are standing strong and the greater community is joining with us to fight for basic working rights.
The next big event is in June during the National Week of Action. Brisbane will be holding its rally on Wednesday June 28 from noon. Further details will be available soon, but for the meantime mark your diary.
