Queensland Branch gets behind cancer ‘Relay for Life’

Thursday March 02, 2006

Officials and staff from the Queensland Branch will take part in a charity fun run and walk late this month (March) to assist the Queensland Cancer Fund.

The ‘Relay for Life’ fundraiser is designed to improve awareness of cancer in Queensland, as well as raise money to help find a cure.

The relay will take place at the Pine Rivers Showgrounds. It will begin at 3pm on Saturday March 25, and will continue for 18 hours until 9am on Sunday March 26.

Teams entering the event will be part of a great afternoon and evening. The Relay begins with a ‘survivor’s walk’, where people who have fought bravely to beat cancer will be honoured.

There will also be lots of entertainment, which will help those entering the event enjoy the evening as they pitch their tent and light their candles for the night session.

Queensland State Secretary Mark Furner said the Branch would be getting right behind the relay. “Once the Branch became aware of this worthy cause we got behind it in a big way. We have organised a group of Officials and staff to team together to run/walk to support this event,” Furner said.

Many businesses who support the NUW have already pledged sponsorship for the event. The Queensland Branch hopes to raise upwards of $10,000 for Queensland Cancer, with over half this amount already pledged. All donations above $2 are tax deductible.

If any member or employer would like to donate money towards this fantastic event, please contact Queensland State Secretary Mark Furner at mfurner@nuw.org.au.
