Over 5000 music fans filled Brisbane’s RNA Showground on Saturday (November 18) to see a host of Australian and overseas music acts ‘Rock the Vote’.

Rock groups You Am I, Shihad, The Butterfly Effect and Spiderbait joined electronic and hip-hop acts Soma Rasa, Lyrics Born, DJ Nick Toth, The Resin Dogs, and Pigeon John for the giant festival.

There were also guest appearances from Federal Labor MP Peter Garrett and the team from ABC comedy series The Chaser’s War on Everything.

‘Rock the Vote’ was put on by the Queensland Council of Unions to help raise awareness about the Howard Government’s IR laws.

In between some incredible live music, every act that hit the stage over the course of the day encouraged young people to enrol to vote and have their say on the issues that mattered to them.

And judging by the number of young people that poured into the Your Rights at Work tent over the course of the afternoon, the message delivered by the musicians was well and truly received.

Brisbane turned on its best spring weather as festival goers arrived in droves from midday.

By mid-afternoon, US rapper Lyrics Born had the crowd jumping with his beats and rhymes.

And the electric atmosphere increased when local group The Butterfly Effect and New Zealand rockers Shihad brought the house down with two massive sets in the evening.

Aussie rock legends You Am I brought the festival to a close with their signature guitars and melodies.

There was a real sense of a community coming together at the festival to express their concern with the direction the Howard Government was taking Australia – especially in relation to his radical IR laws.

The music and the message at a hugely successful Rock the Vote were clear – the people of Brisbane want a change at the next Federal election.
