Queensland Remembers
Thursday April 05, 2007
The Queensland Branch has conducted a vigil on the doorstop of Federal Liberal MP Peter Dutton's office to mark the first anniversary of the Howard Government's radical IR Laws.
Queensland State Secretary Mark Furner said he had seen the extreme effects of Howard’s IR Laws first hand.
"A Queensland employee subsequently sacked by his employer was forced to work around 60 hours of unpaid overtime for the last week in February, received no superannuation contributions from his employer, was forced to sleep in his employer's truck for four nights over the period he had incurred the overtime, was provided with no meals while away from home during the same period and to top it off, was injured on the Sunday while operating a faulty crane used to lift bee hives onto his employer's truck.
"This case was quite simply one of the worst cases of employee mistreatment I have ever in my time with the union," Furner said.
The Queensland Branch is currently in the process of arranging a deed of settlement for the member and ensuring all entitlements are provided.
"Had it not been for the union this employee would be just another statistic under Howard's IR laws," Furner said.
"We need a new Government and a new IR system after this year's Federal election that will respect the working rights of every employee."
