Gambaro's Gotta Go day rated a great success
Friday July 07, 2006
A great crowd of more than 80 people turned out on Friday (July 7, 2006) to support NUW's "Gambaro's gotta go day", protesting outside of the Petrie member's office on Gympie Road, Aspley.
The NUW has focused on specific State Members who have supported the implementation of the new Industrial Relations changes, specificially individual contracts which slash decent Award rates and put workers on a base rate of only $12.75 an hour.
The NUW alongside the AWU, LHMU, QTU and the Labor Party supported the event by using themes "Gambaro guts workers rights", "If your boss is a shark, thank Gambaro" and "John Howard swallowed your rights hook, line and sinker".
The protest went for well over an hour and a half, and the support was overwhelming particularly from the passing traffic.
When the protest finally ended, Branch Secretary Mark Furner offered Teresa Gambaro an AWA which she voted in in Parliament.
This AWA offered a base rate of $12.75 an hour, with a work week of 38 hours spread over a 12-month period, four weeks annual leave with two being cashed out and 24 hours notice being compulsory for sick leave (with a medical certificate and the nature of the sickness having to be provided).
Unfortunately Gambaro was not in to accept this friendly offer, but her collegues were more than happy to pass it on.
