Brisbane National Day of Protest
Friday June 30, 2006
Despite what the ACCI claims, Unionism is on the rise with huge crowds attending the rally on June 28.
Brisbane saw approximately 20,000 workers surround Southbank for the peacefull rally against the new IR laws.
The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) Chief Executive Mr. Peter Hendy claimed that "More members of the public were inconvenienced in going about their daily life by today's union rallies than people turning up to them."
Many would argue that a large percentage of the population were in fact fearful of taking time of work to attend such rallies as under these new laws sacking an employee is an easy task.
Labour Day 2006 is a prime example of how much the public dislike these new laws. This day celebrated the largest Labour Day celebration in the history of Australia and was not deemed an "inconvenience" to the public.
The rally on Wednesday the 28 June 2006 was a successful and enjoyable event. Greg Combet spoke powerfully to the workers, who responded with great strength and unity.
