NUW women join Anna Stewart Memorial Project
Thursday July 27, 2006
NUW members Jo Klaasen and Anne Castle recently joined other women unionists for the Anna Stewart Memorial Project.
Jo and Anne - Delegates at Arnott's in South Australia - took part in the two week project run by SA Unions.
The project is an opportunity for women unionists to connect with others within the movement, learn new skills and understand how unions are run from day to day.
Anne and Jo spent most of their time at the NUW office. However, there was a 'cross-union day' which was hosted by the CFMEU.
This saw Jo and Anne head out to building sites where they learnt about the working lives of other union members.
The women also took part in training, NUW site visits with Organisers Mary Hajistassi and Tony Abdou, organising workers around the National Week of Action that took place in late June, and member recruitment. The women also went on a tour of State Parliament House.
But one of the funnest exercises during the program included working on a creative piece about John Howard’s unfair work laws. Anne came up with this catchy chant:
Howard’s pushing these new laws
We won’t take it anymore
Health and safety it’s our lives
We’d like to go home after five
We work hard five days a week
Fair conditions are all we seek
RDO’s and annual leave
We want to keep these up our sleeves
Five conditions; what a joke
Johnny plans to send us broke
Every worker don’t be conned
Union members won’t be wronged!!
