Ingham’s members fight for a workmate
Tuesday March 12, 2002
Do had given the company 11 months notice of his request to take annual leave at Christmas due to his wanting to go to Vietnam for compassionate reasons based on his beliefs. The company stated a policy of not allowing leave at Christmas for refusing Do’s request, even though other employees had been granted leave at the same time.
Acting Recruiting Officer Marie Nolan held numerous discussions with Ingham’s management in support of Do, however they kept refusing. Joined by South Australian Branch Secretary Nick Thredgold, Marie went to Inghams at lunchtime on the 1st of March and asked our members to support Do’s claim.
This resulted in the stop work meeting, which eventuated in Do receiving his leave. The Union argued that in a multicultural society, employers need to give consideration to workers beliefs and customs.
Congratulations to all our members at Inghams for their solidarity and understanding.
