Try living on this – US Minimum Wage workers in Launceston on Friday

Wednesday July 25, 2007

Since the Howard Government’s introduction of its unfair and unjust WorkChoices Industrial Relations legislation, many have compared it to the US system; a system where those on the minimum wage struggle to get a pay rise and simply cover their day-to-day bills.

Some have even suggested WorkChoices is even more draconian, unjust and unfair than the US system, seen as one of the worst in the developed world.

But how does WorkChoices really compare?

Well workers in Launceston have the chance to find out this Friday (July 27, 2007) when three American minimum wage workers explain just what it’s like to survive in the US.

This meeting is part of the “US Minimum Wage Workers Tour” taking part across the country in coming weeks.

Dolores, Iris and Allen are all campaigning for decent wages, conditions and fair social safety net in their country.

If you are interested in hearing first-hand just what it’s like to live on the US minimum wage be at the Lecture Theatre, Level 2, Launceston General Hospital at 12.30pm on Friday.

For more information on the public meeting, see the flyer below.
