Colac set to celebrate 'Workers Who Make Things Day'
Tuesday October 30, 2007
The National Union of Workers is set to mark “Workers Who Make Things Day” with a huge community BBQ in Colac tomorrow (October 31, 2007).
The Community BBQ will take place in the Colac Memorial Square from Noon until 1.30pm.
This is a great chance for the NUW and the Colac community to recognise the role workers in manufacturing play in the Australian economy and society in general.
It is also an opportunity for the Colac community to voice its displeasure with the Howard Government’s WorkChoices legislation that can leaves workers in regional areas much worse off than their city cousins.
NUW Western Districts Organiser Greg Lee said the lunchtime BBQ promised a lot of fun for the whole town.
“With the NUW representing many major food manufacturing sites in the Colac area it seemed the perfect place for us to host a community BBQ to honour these hard-working Australians.
“Australian working families have never been under so much pressure, with rising fuel and food costs, Interest Rate rises and the pressure of workplace laws which encourage companies to slash wages and conditions.
“It is particularly bad for workers in regional areas where the Howard Government’s so-called ‘Fairness Test’ may not apply. This means companies can slash workers’ wages and conditions for little or no compensation, and there is nothing the employees can do about it.
“We think Australian working families deserve an awful lot better than that. And Wednesday’s BBQ is the community of Colac’s chance to let the Howard Government know their feelings before the looming Federal Election on November 24.”
