Le Roi workers take control
Wednesday July 23, 2008
From less than award
conditions to a 5.5% payrise and a strong union site, workers in Airport West
have taken control of their working lives.
In the space of two months, workers at Le Roi Homestyle Cookies have transformed
their workplace. When they first called NUW Assist, none were union members, they
had issues with superannuation, were on minimum wage and felt unrepresented in
their workplace. After one lunchtime meeting with members of the External
Organising team, 23 of 26 workers joined the union.
As a result of their
strong collective action the workers now have an elected and trained delegate,
a Union Collective Agreement (UCA) which locks in their conditions including
Union Picnic Day, and a 5.5% pay rise. More importantly, they now have
confidence that their voice will be heard at their workplace, not because the
employer deigns to listen but because it is their right.
External Organiser
Tim Gunstone said, "Having a strong Delegate in Toni made the process much
simpler. Even before starting her NUW delegate training she was resolving many
issues on site. It is a credit to her and the other workers that they have made
such progress in a short time."
