SKF members maintain campaign for union agreement
Monday June 26, 2006
NUW members at SKF in Oakleigh continued their campaign for a union agreement today (June 26), with a barbeque outside their workplace.
The members ate together, ensuring the company knew they would not give up their efforts to secure a union agreement.
The warehouse workers have been pressing for a union agreement since first joining the NUW back in February.
However, the company has so far only been willing to offer a non-union agreement.
This is despite the fact that SKF’s global code of conduct states “SKF respects the right of all employees to form and join trade unions of their choice and to bargain collectively”. The code of conduct can be found on the the company’s website.
The NUW recently wrote to SKF’s Swedish parent company detailing their Australian fim’s unwillingness to negotiate collective with its warehouse employees.
Since then, the International Labor Organisation has also become involved in the dispute.
Plenty of the 35 store workers enjoyed the barbeque under clear Melbourne skies today. Bruce Campbell, one of the Delegates at SKF, expressed his relief at belonging to the NUW while the workers sought an agreement.
“We have already received a pay rise that we wouldn’t have received if the NUW wasn’t involved in these negotiations.
“All the boys work really hard here. We aren’t trying to hurt the company, we just want the protection of a union, especially now that Howard’s laws are in effect.”
