Lighting up the night sky

Duncan Williamson didn’t even need time to think when asked what he would be doing to fill in his time during his retirement.
After 20 years as an NUW member at Blowflex in Chelsea in Victoria, Duncan bade farewell to his workmates last week for a life of star gazing.
That’s right; Duncan has great plans to look to the skies with his brand new telescope, bought just weeks ago in preparation for last week’s big day.
After 20 years as an NUW member, site Organiser Steve Howie decided he couldn’t let Duncan head into the stars without some form of recognition though, so last Friday he and Assistant State Secretary Antony Thow paid a special visit to Blowflex to present the man of the moment with a special service certificate.
It was worthy recognition of two decades of loyal membership and passion for the union movement.
One of the proudest members in the crowd at the presentation was Duncan’s son Stuart.
Stuart has worked with his Dad at the Chelsea site since 1992 and was sad to see the partnership coming to an end.
It will be a strange feeling indeed this week for Stuart to head to work knowing his Dad will not be operating one of the machines.
But it is good for the NUW to see that while Duncan may have moved on, the family connection to the union will continue on through Stuart.
Congratulations Duncan on your retirement, and may you have many long and happy years gazing at the stars.
