International Women's Day 2005

Thursday March 03, 2005

There was a new venue, new format and plenty of new faces, which all added up to an even more momentous celebration for International Women's Day in 2005.

This year's event was attended by more than 110 NUW Delegates and Officials and was a resounding success.

The theme was "Speaking Out", in line with the NUW’s aim to give our Delegates a voice at their worksites to help obtain better wages and conditions for their workmates.

State Secretary Martin Pakula began the day with an inspirational speech detailing the NUW's response to the Howard Government's proposed Industrial Relations changes.

He was followed by former Delegate - and now NUW Official - Belinda Jacobi, and Sakata Delegate Kristina Damceska, who detailed their experiences with the union, and how they have learnt to 'speak out'

And then it was time for some practical work with Aura Levin Lipski from Painless Public Speaking taking the Delegates through an hour-long workshop designed to improve their verbal communication and assist them to better get their messages across.

The final session was dominated by discussions on how to improve the work/life balance with an impressive presentation from Cath Bowtell from the ACTU and some lively group discussions.

It was a busy and successful day, which we hope, really did inspire our Delegates to "Speak Out".
