NUW Supporting Defence Logistics Industry Members

NUW Defence Logistics industry members work on defence bases all across Australia. We warehouse anything needed or required by our armed services from uniforms to tanks, guns to helicopters.

Some of the companies that NUW members work for in the defence logistics industry are:

  • BAE Systems
  • BAE - Albury Wodonga Military Area
  • Compass Group (ESS)
  • Serco Sodexho Pty Ltd
  • Serco Australia Pty Ltd
  • Thales
  • Transfield Services

The NUW represents warehouse, distribution and related employees, supervisory employees, explosive maintainers, clerical and related workers who are employed in the Australian Defence industry. It is the union for workers employed by contracting companies carrying out defence support activities.

The NUW represents workers employed in the defence industry either by the Department of Defence (Australian Public Service), or the various private contract providers; as listed above.

Since the 1992 introduction of contracting out non-core activities in the Department of Defence, and the introduction of collective bargaining, the NUW  has been at the forefront of delivering our members increased wages and conditions while maintaining employment opportunities.

The union continues to develop programs to assist our members in the workplace. For example; NUW Assist. This phone-based service is staffed by NUW officials and provides delegates and members anywhere in Australia the ability to receive assistance in relation to their workplace with just one simple phone call to 1300 275 689. NUW Assist provides our members with instant and up-to-date information and assistance.

Through collective bargaining union members receive higher wages and greater job security. For example, across Australia union members receive on average 17% higher wages than non-union members.

Union members also receive free representation on all industrial and occupational health and safety matters, and the security and support of NUW membership.

Although the values of unity, dignity and respect are the union's priority; the union also provides, through your support, these added benefits:

  • free preliminary legal advice
  • access to the NUW’s industry superannuation fund, LUCRF Super (phone 1300 130 780)
  • access to Members Equity Bank for low-cost home loans and credit cards (phone 13 15 63)
  • big discounts on things like home entertainment systems from Union Shopper (phone 1300 368 117), and
  • discounted movie tickets from Hoyts, Village, Greater Union and Birch Carroll and Coyle
