NUW delegates join in the protest in Lonsdale street in support of their fellow union members in the CFMEU

In the face of intimidation from Grocon thugs and bullies, bikies and lawyers; the CFMEU construction workers remain strong in Melbourne and Brisbane.

Last week saw one of the most over-the-top violent pushes by police - at the call of Ted Baillieu - since Occupy Melbourne protesters were attacked in City Square last September. The police were called on again in November 2011 to attack a peaceful strike at Baiada Poultry, where courageous NUW members and community supporters stuck together and held on to win working rights and safety at their site.

Many will have seen the horses wade into peacefully protesting construction workers last week - and now imagine that worker was you, or your son, brother, father, daughter.

The media has done a good job of supporting Grocon management and the Victorian Liberal Government, by relying on old-fashioned stereotypes of building workers - and NUW members have been included in these low and unprofessional attacks on working people. Are we thugs, are we criminals, are we violent? No we're not! These misrepresentations of working people will not work - because these workers ARE US!

CFMEU construction workers at Grocon sites are fighting for the rights of all Union members, the right to:

  • elect and be represented by our own health and safety reps and delegates
  • speak to and be represented by our union organisers
  • be proud of our union membership with clothing and badges
  • be safe, and not bullied or intimidated to leave the union

WHEN THE UNION MOVEMENT IS UNDER ATTACK: WHAT DO YOU DO?

STAND UP, FIGHT BACK!
