Golden Circle Pay Discrepancy Resolved

Golden Circle worker receives correct amount of pay after union

Golden Circle worker Peni Volavola has had his pay classification restored at the correct level by his employer on Christmas Eve, just in time for the festive break.

In December, information came to light which saw the Fijian-born Mr Volavola being paid $1 less per hour than his workmates for performing the exact same duties. At the time, NUW Organiser, Godfrey Moase, met with Mr Volavola, NUW Warehouse Delegate Matt Wilson and Human Resources Manager Rebecca Cure at Golden Circle on Thursday morning, December 17.

Mr Moase made the following comments regarding the situation.

“I pressed the case that Mr Volavola operates the same complex machinery and software as his workmates, and should therefore be paid the same for his time. The initial response from the company was a veiled threat that perhaps everyone else’s wages should be lowered.”

In relation to the situation, Mr Volavola exclaimed that he just wanted some respect, especially during the Christmas period, and that he shouldn't be treated as a second-class citizen at work.

After discussions were held between the NUW and Golden Circle, the company reached a decision - on Christmas Eve - to place Mr Volavola's pay at a higher classification.

Furthermore, Mr Volavola will receive backpay dating from February 2009, as an amendment to his incorrect level of pay.
