Permanent and labour hire casuals stick together and win

ED O meetingAt ED Oates in Melbourne’s north, permanent workers have worked with casual workers to gain permanency and grow our union. In December, after a four hour stoppage and a strong commitment from full-time members that they will fight for permanent work for labour-hire casuals on site, a new Agreement has been voted up that will look after all workers.

Full-time workers kicked things off at 11.30 am on Wednesday 30 November, joined by supporters and unions staff. NUW members faced threats and intimidation on the day but stayed strong and peacefully held their picket line. When it was clear nothing was getting through the gates, full-time and casual workers joined in on a game of football. With only management inside to do the work, the company came to the table.

So what did the members at ED Oates win?

  • A 10%  pay rise over two years and nine months
  • Two new full-time positions, with one more to come in six months time
  • 12 month limit on casual work before an offer of permanency
  • Staff discount  increased from 10% to 20%
  • New grade 6
  • 15 new members, and
  • The experience of casuals and permanent members working together to win.

Congratulations to all involved in proving that when workers stick together, regardless of how they are employed, can achieve positive outcomes for everyone.
