The NUW headquarters finally has a space for its memorabilia, including: photos, trade magazines and badges, which date back as far as the 1870s when the foundations for the NUW were set.
The idea to create a historical display was first envisioned by former NUW Victorian Branch Secretary Anthony Thow in 2004, however finding the right curator – Mark Galea – who had both the experience and knowledge in putting together trade union material was more challenging. The time and effort taken to put together the display has paid off, allowing the union to archive material important to its history, Victorian Branch Assistant Secretary Esmond Curnow commented.
“This is the first time the union has been able to display the history of the NUW dating back to the 1870s when the Millers' Union was formed and followed in the latter part of the 1800s and early 1900s by the Manufacturing Grocers, Rubber Workers, Cold Storage, Storeman and Packers and Commonwealth Foreman's Association."
The opening of the display on August 11 coincided with the retirement of four long-serving Branch Committee of Management members [pictured] Neil Young, Des Shelley, Craig McHenry and Joan Wellington who have, between them, nearly 120 years of membership and committed serivce to the union.
