Union Wins Appeal Against Pharmaceutical Giant
NUW member Colin Makin has won his right to be reinstated to his old position at GlaxoSmithKline after a Fair Work Australia Full Bench today reaffirmed that he had been unfairly dismissed last year.
The union ran an unfair dismissal case on Colin’s behalf after he was terminated by the company for breaching a standard operating procedure. In March, Fair Work Australia found that Colin’s dismissal was harsh and ordered his reinstatement. GSK refused to abide by the umpire’s decision and appealed to a Fair Work Australia Full Bench, which has confirmed the original decision.
Colin said of the win:
“I’m relieved that the original decision still stands and I’m looking forward to getting back to work as soon as possible,” “I’m ever thankful to the Union for what they’ve done for me. I couldn’t have done all this on my own. This result shows what you can achieve when you’ve got the power of a union behind you.”
