Working Safely in Hot Weather

Not everyone has the luxury of working in a cool climate during summer months. Some workers having to endure warm conditions in workplaces, such as warehouses.

BEATING THE HEAT

At the first signs of dehydration, cramps, heat fatigue, or feeling ill from working in hot conditions...

You have the right to:

  • Speak to your OHS rep
  • Fill in injury book
  • Receive first aid treatment
  • Go to a cool area
  • Rest
  • Have a cool drink
  • Return to work when you have recovered
  • Stop work at lower temperatures where escape from the outside elements is impossible

 

Actions to take in hot conditions:

  • Fill in your NUW checklist for working in seasonal heat.
  • Negotiate a heat agreement with your employer using the NUW template
  • Negotiate with your employer to lower the work environment temperatures
  • Check the weather forecasts when hot conditions are expected
  • Walk around your work areas regularly to check on hot conditions & temperature levels
  • Speak to your members about their rights
  • Make sure members report to you when they are feeling ill
  • Get members to fill in the injury report book and the NUW injury register
  • Coordinate regular rest & drink breaks
