Woolworths' Melbourne Liquor Distribution Centre take up the fight in 2011
Woolworths MLDC delegates kick off log of claims, while workers at the site support them with sea of red hats
Today delegates from MLDC Laverton sat down with the company to run through our log of claims, and to provide explanations for our claims to the company.
The delegates were nervous before kicking off the process, but were comforted by the overwhelming support of over 460 members at the MLDC site.
Here’s what the delegates had to say about today’s proceedings:
“Each delegate presented on particular claims, and we all read out your letters to the company”, said day shift delegate Dave Bitton.
“The company were overwhelmed by the letters and support from our members on the floor”, said Craig Barlow.
“We spoke from the heart, so the company knows that our claims aren’t about just money – they’re about our families, our lives and our working conditions”, said Gina Todorovic
“We are very grateful to the members for their support, we knew that they were all wearing red hats to support us, and that made us feel strong”, said Rohan Hill.
“We encourage the members to continue their support and to continue to wear red tomorrow”, said casual afternoon shift delegate David Gardiner.
“All the company could do was cry poor”, said Luke Mackie
“But we know they’re not poor, and they know how strong and united we are, so we are still really hoping for a fair deal”, said Martin Peri.
“Unity is strength!” said Sharyn Cook
Although we made significant progress today by explaining our log of claims, and listening to the company claims – no decisions were made.
However, tomorrow we are looking forward to making progress on the claims and will have more to report back tomorrow night, so keep posted on Facebook and the this website. Unity is strength!
The delegates first report back from their initial meeting with the company can be viewed on the right of this page.
Sea of hands launch campaign for fairer wages and better conditions
Workers at Woolworths’ Melbourne Liquor Distribution Centre last week stood together to launch their campaign for fairer wages and better conditions.
Workers have unanimously endorsed their log of claims in mass meetings last week. The elected delegates were 'pumped' after the meetings.
'The atmosphere of the meetings was electrifying', said day shift delegate Craig Barlow.
'We arrived at our log of claims by conducting extensive surveys and then priority surveys of our members. We were overwhelmed by the level of participation and support from the members here', added delegate Dave Bitton.
'There is a lot to improve on in our greenfields agreement, and we are going to fight hard to get it because this is what all our members have said they want', said delegate Sharyn Cook.
Negotiations are set to commence on the 30th and 31st of May. Stay posted for further updates. Unity is strength!
