Occupational Health and Safety: Quality headsets for interviewers

Thursday June 05, 2008

A common complaint we receive from interviewers is the quality of the headsets they use in their daily work.

The NUW has conducted extensive research into what headsets are available for purchase which will provide a safer and better quality working environment for our members. Several market research companies have begun trialling this new headset and the feedback from both interviewers and managers has so far been very encouraging.

The headsets are made by a company which manufactures equipment for sound engineers and air traffic controllers so good sound quality is imperative. They are available in both double and single sided to suit the needs of users, but it is recommended that double sided are used for increased hearing protection.

A poorly functioning headset is not only potentially hazardous for our short-term and long-term hearing and uncomfortable to wear after long periods of time it also affects the quality of our work. Difficulty in communicating with a respondent means that information provided is lost and it may even be necessary to terminate the call in extreme cases.

If you would like to recommend to your manager that they trial new headsets please e-mail Alex McIntosh: amcintosh@nuw.org.au and we can arrange for a loan headset to be sent out.
