Enrol to vote now
Friday May 04, 2007
Market Research employees are being encouraged to enrol to vote for this year's Federal Election as the debate surrounding Industrial Relations heats up.
However, due to changes introduced by the Howard Government, attempting to enrol to vote after an election could see people miss the chance to have their say.
The electoral roll for first time voters will close at 8pm the night this year's Federal Election is called. Meanwhile, voters looking to change their details will have just three days to change them.
This means that if Market Research workers want to exercise their rights later this year, they need to enrol to vote before the Federal Election is called.
Victorian Market Research Organiser Godfrey Moase said this year's Federal Election was going to be crucial for deciding the future working rights of every employee.
"With the ALP releasing details of its IR policy last weekend, there is now a clear choice for workers at the next Federal Election. On the one hand we have John Howard's IR laws that reduce the wages and conditions of employees. On the other we have Kevin Rudd's policy that promotes Collective Agreements that government figures show provide the best wages and conditions for employees.
"The Election will be crucial for the working conditions of every Australian and I encourage every one who can to get out and vote for a new IR system later this year."
Market Research employees can ensure they have their say on what kind of IR system they want by logging onto the Australian Electoral Commission website and enrolling to vote now. Just click on http://www.aec.gov.au/_content/what/enrolment/forms.htm.
Alternatively, you can log onto www.getup.org.au and get involved in a campaign to improve the voting rights of Australians.
Your Rights at Work are worth fighting and voting for.
