Sunday work remains for Market Research Industry

In a win for Market Research workers, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has varied the Telecommunications (Do Not Call Register) (Telemarketing and Research Calls) Industry Standard 2007 to allow research calls to be made on Sundays.

The changes came after submissions from the NUW, Market Research members, and AMSRO requested that call times on Sundays be retained.

The ACMA received around 500 submissions and petition letters from interested parties.

ACMA Chairman Chris Chapman said that prohibiting Market Research calls on Sunday could potentially reduce the benefits to the community from well-structured research.

“After considering the views put to us, we have concluded that calls should be allowed on Sundays but with tighter calling hours than those that exist under current self-regulatory arrangements. This will allow valuable research to continue.”

NUW Market Research Organiser Marc Burns said the decision by the ACMA was good news for Market Research members.

“This decision makes a distinction between unsolicited sales calls and the valuable work that Market Research employees perform.

“It recognises that workers in the Market Research Industry are collecting information that will be used for the betterment of Australian society.

“It will also help to guarantee working hours and take-home pay for Market Research workers that will let them make ends meet.”

The new standard – which prohibits telemarketing calls on Sundays – began on May 31.
