The drive of NUW members ensures vital local plant remains open
In May 2017 Murray Goulburn announced that they were closing their 125 year old Kiewa plant, leaving the future of secure work in the community in doubt. Delegates held mass meetings with local, state and federal politicians to emphasise how important these jobs are, and joined the wider community in petitioning Murray Goulburn to meet with the union for urgent discussions. Our passionate delegates fought hard to secure the well paid and skilled local jobs that Tangambalanga relies on. Yesterday, workers were given the news that Kiewa would remain open. We won! It has been a hard year, but the workers stood firm and succeeded in their fight to keep these vital local jobs in their community. Both they and our amazing delegates have won a major victory for #jobsyoucancounton and the wider dairy industry in regional Victoria. The task now lies with Saputo to rebuild relationships with farmers, reestablish the milk supply and invest further in the site. We call on Saputo to meet with the Union as a next step to discuss how we can rebuild confidence together. Well done everyone! Read more here.
